A Promotion in Title, a Demotion in Authority
On paper, Demis Hassabis is being elevated: Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet sound like bigger titles than CEO of a single lab. In practice, the person who now controls the machinery is Koray Kavukcuoglu, a 13-year DeepMind veteran now serving as CTO and Alphabet's chief AI architect, who becomes SVP of Google DeepMind with direct oversight of Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams - and who reports straight to Sundar Pichai instead of through Hassabis [1]. Fortune's description of the move is blunt: Kavukcuoglu 'is taking over daily operations as senior vice president,' language that reads far more like an executive handover than a ceremonial rebalancing [2].
Google's public messaging insists nothing structural has shifted for AI safety, with a spokesperson stating flatly, 'To be clear, in terms of frontier AI safety, this transition changes absolutely nothing' [3]. Yet at least one DeepMind employee, speaking anonymously, worried that safety-focused teams 'may lose their influence' as responsibilities move into Kavukcuoglu's operational chain [3]. That gap between the official framing and what people inside the building are saying is the real story here - not the reporting-line diagram itself, but the fact that a company calling this a pure reorganization has staff describing it as a redistribution of power.
