The 24GB floor: why Portable Computer's hardware gate reveals a full agent stack, not a chatbot
Perplexity's Windows release of Portable Computer requires an NVIDIA GeForce RTX or RTX PRO GPU with at least 24GB of VRAM [1]. That threshold is unusually high for what looks, on the surface, like a desktop AI assistant, and it has a real consequence: it excludes most of the current RTX 50-series consumer lineup, including the RTX 5080 (16GB), RTX 5070 Ti, and RTX 5070 (12GB) [2]. Only higher-VRAM cards qualify - the RTX 3090 and 3090 Ti (24GB), RTX 4090 (24GB), RTX 5090 (32GB), and workstation-class RTX PRO 4500 Blackwell (32GB) and RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell (96GB ECC) [3]. Hardware trade press argues this steep floor is a deliberate design signal rather than a flaw: 'The orchestrator, planner, tool router, scheduler, durable task queue and local search index all run on the device. This is not a chat window with a small model bolted underneath' [2]. In other words, Portable Computer is trying to replicate Perplexity's full cloud agent harness locally, and running an orchestrator alongside a 27-billion-parameter model simultaneously is what actually consumes the VRAM. The same PPLX 27B and Qwen 3.8 27B models that debuted with the Linux-only DGX Spark version in August 2026 carry over to the Windows build [4], with NVIDIA's newer Nemotron 3.5 Lightning model slated to join soon.
