Inside GlassAI: A Single Neural Pass Replaces the Traditional Camera Pipeline
Glass Imaging built GlassAI, a 'neural ISP' that integrates demosaicing, noise reduction, and sharpening into a single neural-network pass while modeling the specific optical behavior of each lens, rather than running a camera through a traditional multi-stage image-signal-processor pipeline[1]. The network is trained on the particular optical properties of a given camera system, so image quality improves as the photo is taken rather than being edited afterward[2]. This isn't a lab demo: Honor Device Co. already licenses GlassAI for the zoom on its 600-series phones, which pair it with a 200-megapixel main camera, and Glass Imaging has shown a raw-video version running on Qualcomm chipsets[1]. A member of Glass Imaging's ML team, Shivansh Rao, has said submicron camera pixels encode fine detail that conventional image processing can't decode, citing controlled tests showing more than 50% improvement on standard resolution measures as pixel size shrank from 0.75 to 0.35 microns[1]. The deal also drew reaction on X: Peyman Milanfar (@docmilanfar) posted that the deal represents 'a big investment in computational imaging,' adding 'the camera is the future of intelligence.'
