Anthropic merges Claude Chat and Cowork, launches Docs and Slides

Anthropic folded Claude Chat and Claude Cowork into a single conversational interface, so users no longer have to decide upfront whether a task belongs in a quick chat or a bigger agentic workspace ^[1]. Claude Design, introduced earlier in 2026 for website and prototype work, was folded into the same unified interface alongside the two brand-new tools ^[3]. Claude now infers how much work a request needs and pulls in whatever capability that requires, whether that is a one-line answer, an agentic multi-step job that keeps running after the laptop closes, or an Artifacts-based document. Alongside the merge, Anthropic shipped Claude Docs and Claude Slides in beta: Docs lets a user ask for a document and keep collaboratively editing it, while Slides supports drafting a full deck, editing individual slides, and presenting straight from the conversation, with export to PowerPoint, PDF, Microsoft Word, or Google Docs ^[2]. The rollout is staged rather than immediate: Pro and Max subscribers on web, desktop, and mobile get it first starting September 17, and Team and Free plans follow later ^[2]. Net effect: Claude's lineup shrinks from three modes to two, chat (now inclusive of Cowork, Design, Docs, and Slides) and Claude Code.

The timing lines up with two separate pressures. Internally, Anthropic says the split between Cowork, for bigger work, and Design, for visual work, kept generating the same complaint: people used both but resented having to decide where a task belonged before they even started ^[2]. Externally, Anthropic is racing an industry-wide shift toward single-interface AI 'superapps'; OpenAI is reportedly pursuing a nearly identical consolidation, folding ChatGPT, Codex, and potentially Atlas into one product ^[4]. On r/ClaudeAI and r/Anthropic, the dominant theory is that merging the lightly metered chat tier into the quota-hungry Cowork tier is a disguised way to push users toward burning through usage limits faster, with one commenter comparing it to a restaurant with unlimited breadsticks suddenly pushing customers onto the main menu. The top-voted thread argues the feature people actually wanted was not Docs, Slides, or Design at all, but tighter integration between Claude Code and Projects. Anthropic's own developer account promoted a narrower version of that same integration the same day, noting Claude Design, Slides, and Docs now work inside Claude Code and can be pointed at a repo's actual files and RFCs, though that framing has not visibly reached the skeptical Reddit threads. A parallel 'Projects civil war' has also broken out over the same siloed, read-only memory design. Tellingly, the capability commenters singled out as genuinely unifying was session persistence, Claude continuing to work after the laptop closes, with Docs and Slides dismissed by one commenter as merely 'a bonus.' Not everyone is skeptical: a vocal minority welcomes the consolidation outright and questions why Chat and Cowork were ever split in the first place, though at least one commenter countered that because Anthropic, unlike OpenAI, has no unlimited free chat tier, merging away the lighter-weight option removes the one outlet that felt free. A smaller crosspost on r/Anthropic ran a similarly unimpressed thread, with one comment calling the merge 'a loadbearing footgun' and others complaining about the pace of disruptive interface changes in recent weeks.

Cowork's journey to being absorbed took well under a year. It began as a quiet research preview at the end of January 2026, built to give non-technical knowledge workers a Claude Code-like agentic tool ^[7].
